Although I dislike having to talk about work issues, I feel I do need to vent this time around. In a few weeks time I will be resigning from Orange & Bronze. It’s time for me to move on. It is no longer the same place as it was; change is inevitable, I guess, but it frustrates me to no end that I feel somewhat powerless to change things. A part of me realizes that I really don’t have a true say in things, technically speaking. But it’s never been this way, or at least it never felt this way before.

(And Yes, I am Still Alive).
-
Yes, this blog is still alive, although a little… quiet.
-
Two things:
- Work on tool that will be released as open source. I'm currently finishing up a component that we'll be releasing as open source in the coming week or so, once I get the bits cleaned up and checked in. It's a case of an "itch to scratch", and I'll be using it for a possible work project.
- Another haircut. I got rid of my long hair today. That is all.
-
I recently gave a lightning talk on git-svn at Barcamp Manila, and I thought some people might be interested in my day-to-day workflow when I work on projects.

I’ve been hacking on a small panel for my current desktop environment— I’ve switched to using a really minimal no-frills environment consisting of openbox-3 and a small dock/notification area, since I was getting antsy about the GNOME 2 panel. I only wanted a simple list of open windows on a particular desktop and a clock, and I didn’t need too much chrome on that. I couldn’t quite set up the GNOME 2 panel to not use buttons or alternatively maximize the space for window title text, so I decided to simply ditch the panel altogether.

I’ve been trying to find a copy online (or at least a summary of) Gilingang Bato by Edgardo Reyes. The short story was published in the 1960s. It depicts a poor family who own a small millstone for griding rice; they sell rice cakes and other sweets to subsist.

Since I'm a bastard to please, I've again switched away from ion3. I'm now back to using Openbox 3 as my work environment, though I believe it to be suboptimal for my workflow. Call me fickle. Details under the cut.
-
If you’ve ever seen me work, you probably know that I am quite comfortable with the command line. In fact, I prefer opening a terminal or writing a shell script rather than booting up a file manager; I can do a lot more on the command line, without taking my hands off the keyboard.

On Indefinite Hiatus. Will probably post some twitts.

Recently, we’ve been assigned to assist another company in a development/maintenance role. They had an existing web application, written in Java and used by a large number of users— the web application was up and running and they needed to modify the application to interface with an external system, but they did not have the people who knew Java well enough onboard and the previous developers were no longer available to help them in this. That’s where we came in: we provided the needed skills to add the feature in.

- JM Ibanez does not sleep. He just goes into suspend mode.
- JM is a programming god.
- JM doesn't troubleshoot computer problems or software bugs; computers are just scared of him.
- JM Ibanez is actually a bunch of Linux daemons that have become sentient, written and maintained at a secret laboratory somewhere in southern Metro Manila.

So, because I'm such a geek, I'll post more about my Git experience.

I was just bitten by an incredibly stupid bug in IE. While working on a small webapp which had a drop-down menu (built from CSS and ordinary lists), I was miffed to find the menu seemingly going behind a drop-down (select) form field in IE. After trying the obvious fixes (setting a CSS z-order for the menu, resetting the z-order for the controls including the select control), I did a Google search, reasoning that someone must have encountered a similar problem.

After using Evolution for quite a bit to read my work mail, and after some deliberation, I decided to switch to Gnus, as I'm already doing a lot of my editing and what-not inside Emacs. I also wanted to keep a small memory footprint, as I'm using my work laptop as a development machine too— Firefox as it is grows to 40% of the machine's memory when I use it, and adding Evolution would mean that running builds on the machine would consume swap as well.

I decided to actually write about my experiences and my introduction to computing. I wanted it down for some semblance of posterity. This is part 2; you can read part 1 here. I should warn you though– this is much longer than Part 1. Part 3 of this series will come soon enough.

From Slashdot: Google has recently released Google Talk, an IM service running on the Jabber/XMPP protocol (which means anyone can connect to the service using their favorite open source client). According to their helpful developer pages, they plan to provide federated service and are in talks with Sipphone and Earthlink. The protocol they are using to carry VoIP is still under wraps, but they are planning to document it and open it up to allow other IM clients to support VoIP.

Caveat: I am currently enrolled in a certain IT education system known for its ads featuring two teen actresses, one of which is associated with the so-called "jologs" and "bakya" crowd, with the other being too sugary-sweet and having a gratingly high-pitched voice. To say that the past month or so has been a wonderful whirlwind for me would be like saying the universe started off with a bang: pure understatement, and it doesn’t quite describe the impact of it all, and You Simply Had To Be There to really, really understand it. I’m living a semi-charmed life. I attended the first live jazz performance of my life, I got to talk to a real life jazz artist, I am surounded by wonderful friends, I am doing something I love while studying— so on and so forth, including certain events I will perhaps divulge one day.
-
Because of an abysmal turn of events, I have caught the cold. My throat feels like someone has been rubbing it with sandpaper— or rather, it feels like someone rammed a sanding machine down my throat and put it on high while humming the opening bars to Bohemian Rhapsody. My nose is a frickin’ faucet, with the strange thing being that it seems only one nostril is blocked. Makes me wonder whether this rhinovirus has a cruel sense of humor— yeah, block one of his nasal passages and keep him alive by keeping the other free. Go figure.

Well folks, it’s been weeks since I last updated with anything substantial (the last entry, YAMQ, doesn’t count). It’s been a busy month for me so far. I’m back to school, I’m now twenty-three, and I just attended one amazing live jazz performance, among other things.

You scored as Existentialist. Existentialism emphasizes human capability. There is no greater power interfering with life and thus it is up to us to make things happen. Sometimes considered a negative and depressing world view, your optimism towards human accomplishment is immense. Mankind is condemned to be free and must accept the responsibility.

Had a brilliant conversation with my long-time friend, Leandro last night. We caught up with each other’s lives, and talked about each of our own passions— computers in my case, and architecture. Such conversation was something I truly miss. We talked about how architecture was about solving problems. Leandro asked me if I had heard about Christopher Alexander; I replied that the name was familiar to me. It was, because I realized belatedly, after Leandro described Alexander’s major work, A Pattern Language, that Alexander influenced current-day thinking into the production and design of software— he is considered the father of the pattern language movement in computer science. We talked about the intersection of the two fields. And we talked about the opposite sex, about love, about life.

On a side note, Zak also tried connecting to the Undernet, first by connecting directly, then by tunneling to a machine outside the PH netblock. I’ve been looking through my notebooks and files. I apparently have a lot of story fragments lying around, waiting to be fleshed out properly, or to be polished. They’re my stillborn children— the corpses of stories never born into the world. Sometimes I wonder whether I really have the gift of writing. I am, for good or bad, my greatest critic. But no matter: I will still write for the love of writing, even if I criticize myself harshly, even if I feel my prose is poor. One must try and experience such things; otherwise, why live at all?

Just got home from the hospital. My dad’s finally discharged, though he’s still undergoing a lot of medication. (It was a blood clot/hemmorhaging somewhere in the frontal portion of his head; the doc mentioned it was in the arachnoid IIRC; also the word ‘ischemia’ was mentioned, but I’m hazy about that. Either way, there was and still is bleeding in his head, so they’re giving him medication to relieve that.)

I’m still here at Las Piñas Doctor’s Hospital, keeping watch over my dad. The in-room phone has a socket for plugging the modem, which I did, hence the Internet connection. My dad’s fine now, more or less, though his blood pressure’s risen recently. They did some tests on him— blood sugar, urinalysis, CT scan, ultrasound. Results aren’t in, I’m told. I do know, however, that my dad has sinusitis, and I overheard the doctor tell my mom that there is a polyp growth (benign) in his sinus (IIRC, they did an ultrasound scan for that, can’t remember the exact details how.)

I don't know whether God/gods/omniscient being(s) exist(s) or not (neither do I deny nor affirm His/their/its existence). I have been educated as a Roman Catholic, and am well aware of the history and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church.
